Citywide Wifi plan for Miami Beach May 15, 2006

Are you one of those people who can't live without the internet, even while on vacation? If so you will be delighted by the City's new plans that will go into affect in the summer.

The city anounced last year in July:

"MIAMI BEACH – Today, Jorge Gonzalez, Miami Beach's City Manager, announced the city's proposed plan for "Wireless Miami Beach." The 12-month initiative will result in a citywide wireless broadband network to support mobile broadband connectivity for police officers, firefighters, building inspectors, parking officers, public works employees, and other government officials. The network will also allow the public to access high-speed Internet at no cost in hot zones located throughout the city.

"Wireless Miami Beach will make our city safer, our government more efficient, and provide our residents and visitors the opportunity to access information anytime," Gonzalez added.

The city has developed a business model that supports the capital and operating expenses for the network and plans to release a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the design, deployment, and management of the network sometime in August, 2005. City officials plan to complete the citywide deployment sometime in mid-2006."

basicly, you can log on in any place around Miami Beach, outdoors and indoors except in high-rises over 3 floors high. This means you will be able to just take your laptop out to the beach and do your business while sitting on a comfortable beach chair and sipping your lemonade under the sun.

In the meantime, there are several internet cafes spread troughout Miami Beach, as well as Wifi in Starbucks store and free internet in the libraries.

I’ve been seeing “Free Public WiFi” showing up in my connections list, but so far it’s not providing any bandwidth. Looks like equipment is being installed, but it isn’t active yet.

3. Paul - September 2, 2006

Is it up yet???

4. Francisco Lopez - September 2, 2006

Hope the city include over the 3rd floor. Atlantic Broadband and Bellthouth throttle the service by doing packet shaping. If you pay 40 to 50 bucks to do P2p, Video straming and broadcasting, VOIP, the chances are that even if you subscribed to their high speed internet you will be able to do as anyonw with a far lower speed or bandwidth will. Is just plain cojmpartmentailze thievery done between them qand Echolabs, their provider for ISP services. May be if the city do a complete work, most of those using the net for simple apps, like e mailing and surfing can just log into the city service and the big guys fullfill their service promise.

Last I heard the problem was their putting their recievers in the lightposts, and the city of miami beach doesn’t own all the poles they need so they have to negotiate with miami mass transit and i believe it was waste and management who own the light posts they don’t already own themselves…they estimated the wifi connection to go into effect sometime this december now instead of mid 2006…soo, stil waiting!!!!

Are there any areas where this access DOES work, or is it plain not up at all?

8. Christina - May 8, 2007

I live in a condo on the north side of Miami Beach and I have not been able to access this yet. It would be wonderful though, if it gets going.

I travel a lot beacuse of work and I always have to be conected beacuse my work is in SouthAmerica, so I decide to saty in Miami Beach beacuse I read this “GREAT NEWS about the city of Miami …
I am here for more than a week and it’s a itty I have to go running to my hotel to get conected every hour.

Miami Beach is the new riviera of international business and tourism. This city can afford to give free internet access using Wi-Fi technology to all your visitors from anywhere in town. This is unexpensive and it will be a wise investment.

I don’t know if this blog is still active, but I’d like to thank you on the information on Internet cafes. I’m currently editing Wikitravel’s English-language Miami guide and it was nice to find another source on Internet cafes. Thank you once again.

I know this has been tried in a number of cities. From what I’ve heard it never works out. I would love to have free wifi around town.

20. Melissa M. - May 14, 2009

I just read in the most current version of the Miami Beach residents’ newsletter/magazine (that comes every 3 months or so) that they’re doing testing now and hope to have service up and running by July or August. Here’s hoping it’ll actually work!

21. Xavier - July 30, 2009

Yes, still no internet access. Just a gimmick presented by the city council of buffoons back in 2006. Now it is July 2009 and once again they have lied and an investigation should go into what happened to all of the money. No one ever asks where the money goes. They should probably keep their mouths shut and focus on the police driving up and down the beach running over and killing tourists and harassing gays – its what they are good for and known for.
