Hi! I will be in South Beach over Labor Day weekend, and right now have reservations at two different hotels: The Park Central Hotel and The Hotel. Which one do you recommend? I am interested in best room, atmosphere, location, and pool…and of course, distance to the beach. Thanks so much!

Hi, I own CoastRentals.com and we just released our Top 5 Beach Desintations for 2007 and South Beach was one of them. I wasn’t sure if that was something you’d want to mention on your South Beach blog or not – I really like all the info you have on the area, very comprehensive.

Hey!
Just got back from South Beach, FL. I must say I was more than impressed with the Whitelaw Hotel on 808 Collins Ave. The lounge is nice. The lounge and all the rooms are white. Pure white… the linens, the towels, the curtains, the floor……It is just soooo relaxing!
It is less than 3 minutes distance to the beach. Collins has all kinds of stores; anything from A/X, Sephora, Banana Republic, QuickSilver, Kenneth Cole,… and more!
Also, the famous News Cafe that Versace used to go to for breakfast is with walking distance. I would advise NOT to rent a car, because parking is very very $$$; because it is metered parking. Also, Puerto Sagua a Cuban Cafe (Shaq seen there) has the most amazing cafe con leche (aka cafe latte)

Mid Century Modern – in Hip Miami Beach, FL
Miami Modern (MIMO) House – 1950,s architecture

Miami Beach is hip and modern and Mid Century Moderne Homes are part of the vibe, also known as MIMO Architecture. These postwar homes look like today’s retro and modern homes. Modeled with unique features and streamline style, these homes are also very practical. They were made in celebration of the end of the war because they are fun and out of the box. Common elements include boomerangs, accordion fin walls and cheese-hole mansonry but overall they are sleek and elegant with daring angles and sharp lines.

Mimo buildings and homes, like Mid Century Modern around the country, can be found in Miami Beach, Bay Harbor Islands and Miami.

In addition, MIMO homes were built respectful of in Florida’s climate, yesterday’s Green Homes. The floors are often made of Terrazo, poured concrete with marble chips, used in many applications today especially new high end buildings and major metropolitan airports. The homes were originally built with awning windows that allowed breezes to flow freely while protecting the indoors from summer rain. The western parts of the homes often had less windows and more landscaping.

Gas stoves were the rage, same as today.

World renowned MIMO buildings include the fabulous and famous Fontainbleau Hotel and the Eden Roc Hotel.

We have a reservation at the Miami Beach Resort and Spa which is 2.5 miles from South Beach. Do you have any comments about this hotel?

Do not EVER stay at the Whitelaw Hotel. Our room was robbed and the hotel did absolutely nothing about it. The ’safe’ was taken from our room. No one even apologized for the inconvenience…
