The City of Miami Beach launches “Bike to Work” week from March 6-11. Read more about it in this article from Miami Herald.
Personally, I think biking in South Beach is a great idea to beat the traffic, worry less about parking–especially on the busy streets like Ocean Drive, and save some gas. Now, you might say you find that the bus is a great alternative to driving becuase it is very inexpensive ($1.50) and it can take you virtually anywhere. Yes, thats true. But— Last week I took the bus from Lincoln Road to 50th street. From my window I saw two girls riding there bikes. so this bus stopped about twice on each street, once at the bus stop and once at the light. It was as if the bus was competing with the bikes, passing them, then they passed us, and so it went for about 15 blocks till I stopped paying attention. So if you can get a great workout and some fresh air in the same amount of time, I’d say take the two wheel option.
Miami Beach residents are also free to compete for a $375 gift certificate to the Miami Beach Bicycle Center by submitting a photo or brief 50-word essay outlining ”their concept of traffic congestion or how it makes them feel,” a city announcement said.
Submissions can be emailed to mailto:essaycontest@1800234RIDE.com or sent to: SFCS, c/o Essay Contest, 3201 W. Commercial Blvd., Suite 211, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention everyones favorite scooters that South Beach is famous for. I will devote a diffrent article to that.

I’m all in favourite of ‘alternative’ means of transportation. Mines my feet
I can never understand why more people don’t either walk or cycle to work, especially if they have only a couple of miles to travel. It’s so much healthier for everyone.
I’ve lived on the beach for more than 8 years, and I have either ridden my bike or walked to work every day (not counting rainy days).
Just a few words of caution from your den mother here. Walking or biking in the dead of summer does take some getting used to. If you’re wearing a suit to work, you’ll arrive as a sweaty heap, looking like a mop. Also keep in mind, not safe to be outdoors during a thunderstorm. Lightning strikes! And be VERY alert for those drivers who don’t know a pedestrian or bicyclist from thin air. I know a local who went flying off his bicycle because a cab pulled up on the curb in front of him and the tourist riding on the passenger side flung the door open — all in a split second.
I don’t mean to be a killjoy … just want you to be safe while you enjoy your bike ride.
